Why would he give up Alaska to Putin? It's a state with 2 Republican Senators, plenty of natural resources and oil, and a decent amount of Republican voters. Its's also one our biggest russia deterrents (yes, I know he's chummier with Putin, but hes been kinda spatting with him lately). If he were to do that, he'd be an idiot. 

The reason their meeting will be in Alaska is that if Putin goes anywhere else, in any other airspace, he would be arrested immediately by the ICC. Currently, USA isn't a member of the ICC, and Russia to Alaska only goes through Russian and American airspace.

Don't listen to the people making wild speculations about a meeting that will only be about Ukraine. There will be talked about land, but that will be about land between Russia and Ukraine, which Kyiv already exclaimed that is a deal breaker.

The realistic answer to the whole land situation would be formally recognizing Crimea as part of Russia and potentially discussing some of the land that has been taken over by Russia during the war. Selling, gifting, swapping or otherwise ceding Alaska is not realistic in the slightest. To be clear, there are different territorial concessions.

What Putin offered (or maybe he asked even more it's unclear if Witkoff misunderstood) was that Ukraine retreats from the rest of the Donbass that Russia hasn't conquered in exchange for a ceasefire. 

The offer is ridicolous because it would ask Ukraine to unilaterally give away some of it's currently most fortified territory and people in exchange for a promise guaranteed to be broken by Russia. This would include the new line being built by Ukraine on the border of the Donbass which they are preparing as a fallback plan. 

Assuming Russia continues to fight at this pace they could likely reach this result mid/late 2026 assuming that they don't gain ground more quickly due to a breakthrough/acceleration or don't get slowed down due to Rasputijia, drones, needing to siege Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, economic problems or Ukraine mobilizing 18-25 age group. Even in this scenario that would give Ukraine time to fortify better behind and European weapons deliveries to increase. Even in the case of a an operational breakthrough it's unlikely Russia would be able to get the rest of the Donbass quickly.   


The offer is made to be refused or it's a hope that this might encourage different actors to pressure Ukraine to do so. Putin believes his army is about to make big gains in Ukraine, something that will depend on Ukrainian fortifications, foreign aid and   


Their was a European and Ukrainian counterproposal to Putins offer which was a ceasefire on current line to negotiate, or a swapping of Ukrainian controlled territory the Donbass with territory in Kherson and Zaporizhia but Ukraine obtains iron solid security guarantees.  Putin is unlikely to accept. 

  
Problem is that while Putins proposal is absurd and not something any self interested NATO member would accept as it is, the US/EU/Ukraine coalition doesn't have so far enough leverage to bring Putin to accept their proposal. 

There are several things that Trump could do to achieve this leverage over Putin, the so called peace through strength approach which has been talked about often. 

1 Implement Congress approved sanctions on Russia which include secondary sanctions, not useful on the short term but make a war until 2026 even more costly. 

2 Use either 5 billion Russian frozen funds or 10B through the Ukraine mineral agreement to finance the delivery of some more sophisticated military aid other then the traditional munitions.   
Such as 200 Atacams (sent so far 50, yearly production 360, stock 1138, Entire Production cost 200-300Million for all), 200 JASSM (sent: 0, YPR: 720 in 2024, stock? EPC: 300M), 250 Amraams (in particolar 120D) would be useful to reduce glide bombs (sent: 0, YPR: 1200, stock: Thousands, EPC: 300-492M)

Including old Bradeleyes and basic shells would obviously help. 

Some of this missiles have alread been bought by Europe or Ukraine for Ukraine, but are to be produced instead of given from new production or stock which will take a long time. 

This would essentially provide Ukraine additional payload and striking capability to expand it's hunt for Russian depots, high command and logistic nodes, hampering Russian logistics is the best bet to halt any major Russian push. 

Biden was too afraid to provide meaningful capabilities together, Trump should not have such a selfimposed handicap. 

  
3 If instead we go to unorthodox options to increase US leverage especially the ones that pass through EU the options are many more and interesting but so far the political will is lacking. 

  
Peace through strength is the only approach which has good chances of bringing lasting peace and securing US interests. Other approaches that give Russia major concessions would make peace temporary and the US/EU/Ukraine weaker.

There are a few tough sticking spots here.

* Russia is not simply going to walk away from territory it currently occupies after losing half a million men and a good chunk of its military to get it.  One of the constant rules of war is that if you are still sitting on enemy territory, you're winning the war and you're unlikely to just give it back without some other concessions as compensation.  One way or another, Russia is going to be rewarded for aggression.
* Ukraine was the victim of aggression, understandably doesn't want to cede land, and rightfully does not trust that Russia won't be back for more in a couple years after having a chance to rearm.
* Russia seems perfectly willing to engage in a war of attrition.  They can afford to lose men a lot longer than Ukraine can.
* Ukraine is not going to be able to push the Russians out without a lot more Western help than they are currently getting, i.e. combat troops.  They are not going to get them.

Unless Ukraine is willing to continue bleeding forever, it has to give up something.  It is losing.  It sucks that they are losing, and they don't deserve it, but life is hard sometimes.  The good guys lose some wars.  If you want to blame someone, blame the rudderless Biden administration that failed to forestall the invasion when it possibly could have.

So two things need to happen:

* Ukraine has to bow to the inevitable and cede land.  They have already lost it.  If sheer guts and bravery could have recovered it, they would have done so already.
* There has to be an adequate security guarantee in place that keeps Russia out.  That might be NATO membership, significant American/European investment, a fully modernized Ukrainian military, or nuclear rearmament.  

But this can't happen as long as Ukraine holds to the fantasy that this war is something it can win.
